Grant Construction, Inc., a family-owned business, established in 1994, specializes in large-scale construction projects focusing on concrete, framing and tower cranes.  Our projects include single-family, multi-family, mixed-use and commercial projects throughout California.  Employing approximately 450 people, our headquarters are in San Luis Obispo, with an additional office in Bakersfield.  

Job Summary: 

Reporting to the President, the Bilingual Health & Safety Specialist will ensure job sites comply with federal, state and local safety regulations, to prevent accidents, injuries and fatalities and to foster a culture of safety. This person will conduct site audits, identify hazards, deliver training, manage PPE (personal protective equipment) and investigate incidents.  The key responsibilities for this role include creating safety policies, enforcing compliance, conducting risk assessments and maintaining documentation. 

Inspections & Audits: 

Conduct regular site inspections to identify potential hazards, non-conforming work, or faulty equipment. 

Compliance Monitoring: 

Ensure compliance with OSHA (specifically 29 CFR 1926) regulations, environmental regulations and company safety policies. 

Risk Management: 

Perform job-site hazard analyses and develop risk mitigation plans. 

Training & Education:

Develop and conduct safety training, including new hire orientations, “Toolbox Talks” and specific safety procedures. 

Policy Development:

Partner with project management to develop site-specific health and safety plans (HASPs) and emergency response procedures. 

Incident Investigation:

Investigate accidents, near-misses and injuries; prepare incident reports and recommend corrective actions. 

Documentation: 

Maintain safety records, including incident reports, inspection logs and training records. 

Safety Equipment: 

Ensure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and used correctly. 

Environmental Monitoring:

Test air quality, noise levels, and hazardous material exposure to ensure levels remain within safe legal limits. 

Qualifications: 

At least 3 years of experience in the construction industry as a safety officer or consultant;

Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, or related field, preferred;

OSHA 30-hour Construction Certification, required;

OSHA 500/510 Trainer Cards and credentials such as CHST, OHST, or CSP, desired;

CSP (Certified Safety Professional) desired;

Bilingual English – Spanish (oral and written) proficiency, required;

Strong knowledge of construction regulations;

Proven experience in safety training, ability to perform risk assessments and proficiency in incident reporting software.

Proficiency in the MS Office suite of products;

Exceptional oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;

Astute time management, attention to detail, accuracy, organizational, planning, effective multi-tasking, problem-solving, analytical, follow-through skills;

Ability to work effectively alone and within a fast-paced, deadline-driven, collaborative team environment;

Ability to walk long distances, climb ladders and stand for extended periods of time in various weather conditions.

Valid CA driver’s license, clean and insurable driving record and own vehicle required.  

Compensation:

$95K - $115K DOE for this full-time, exempt position.

80 hours of paid vacation annually during years 0 – 4 and rising incrementally thereafter, on an accrual basis;

40 hours of standard CA paid sick time annually, allotted in a lump sum after 90 days of employment and at the 1st of the year thereafter;

Mileage reimbursement provided by employer.
