Job Summary: 

The Solar Project Engineer will be responsible for providing design and technical project drawings for new commercial-scale solar projects, while working with external architects, engineers and contractors on photovoltaic (PV) projects, in addition to learning/assisting in the design of solar thermal (ST) projects involving electrical and structural components of (PV) systems for both retrofit and new construction commercial projects; design plumbing and structural components of solar thermal (SHW) systems for applicable projects.  The ideal candidate will be responsible for identifying the most appropriate technical and material solutions, per site conditions, contract requirements, client design parameters, program / regional incentives, or other variables to optimize the client solution.

Responsibilities / Duties: 

Prepare permit and construction drawings using AutoCAD software;

Specify equipment and generate BOMs (Bills of Materials);

Provide construction support, including detailed layout and construction drawings to installation teams;

Work with structural and mechanical engineering consultants in preparing plans for permitting;

Perform pipe and equipment sizing calculations and generate schematic mechanical designs based on the relevant building and plumbing codes involving SHW systems;

Perform conduit, wiring and equipment sizing calculations and generate 1-line and 3-line PV electrical designs based on the NEC;

Review work by other engineers, adequately assess and correct errors and be able to identify and clearly communicate any problems, or areas of uncertainty, when necessary;

Work with architects and contractors on early design stages of solar projects to  define and communicate structural and mechanical needs for projects;

Work closely with project management team and forepeople on communicating issues with upcoming projects;

Provide other project management assistance to the team, as needed;

Conduct site visits as needed; accurately measure and document site conditions including structural, electrical and plumbing details;

Be involved with project management planning and prioritization of project deadlines;

Serve as a project engineer for multiple concurrent jobs;

Provide technical details of PV and ST projects to assist in rebate applications and submissions

Work closely with the Director of Engineering involving special projects;

Lead trainings and contribute to team in other capacities, as needed;

Assign sub-tasks to Design Engineers and assist in managing workflow;

Assume responsibility for the overall design on assigned projects;

Formulate plans for improvement in existing systems and be able to lead the design and building of new systems, as required. 

Requirements: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Design, or similar discipline;

At least 2 years’ related experience in a similar role as a Solar Project Engineer, Solar Design Engineer, or equivalent;

Proficient AutoCAD experience necessary;

Knowledge of mechanical and electrical design;

Familiarity with commercial solar system construction and ability to communicate design intent to installation teams;

Previous experience designing/building ST systems ,strongly preferred;

Astute experience with Microsoft Office and Project Management software applications necessary; SalesForce software experience, a plus;

Proficient oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;

Proficient organizational, time management, attention to detail and multi-tasking skills;

Experience reading, understanding and interpreting architectural drawings;

Understanding of IBC (International Building Code) requirements and NEC (National Electric Code) and their applications to solar system design;

Ability to drive to job sites, climb ladders, and lift at least 25 pounds in weight.

 

Compensation:

$64K - $75K salary range for this full-time, exempt position, plus goal-targeted bonus and benefits to include:
