Job Summary: 

Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer, the Senior Research & Development Manager is responsible for directing and coordinating new product design, development, verification and validation.  In addition, the position shares responsibility for the implementation of the strategic business plan,  through identification and analysis of opportunities for the acquisition/divestiture of technologies, products and companies, as well as establishment of strategic partnerships where appropriate.  The ideal candidate will also be responsible for certain business development activities, including setting up and managing strategic relationships and alliances with other third-party companies. In these instances, the companies may leverage each other’s expertise, technologies, or other intellectual property to expand their capacities for identifying, researching, analyzing and bringing to market new businesses and new products. 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

Support company vision and mission statement and participates in the company's continuous improvement program (LEAN);

Research and acquire new technologies for innovative products for the company to manufacture;

Maintain and staff functioning microbiology laboratory appropriate for research and product development activities, including providing guidance and support for staff projects, participating in periodic reviews in collaboration with the R&D Manager, and administering timecard and attendance needs when the R&D Manager is unable to;

Work in collaboration with Marketing, Quality Assurance and Manufacturing departments to  adhere to customer and regulatory requirements for product realization; coordinate all new product development activities throughout a product’s life cycle (concept to post-launch support);

Assist Technical Services in the drafting and editing of technical documents, including

Instructions for use of new products;

In conjunction with senior management, develop long and short-term strategic business plans and modify plans periodically through strategic planning;

Partner with senior management to set up and manage strategic relationships and alliances with other third-party companies to develop, manufacture, sell, or purchase products and technologies;

Negotiate and build relationships with external organizations to author, review and establish  formal agreements and contracts, under the direction of the Chief Scientific Officer; 

In conjunction with departmental stakeholders to quickly respond to the needs / concerns of strategic customers; conduct visits with high-value customers and attend professional meetings periodically / as needed to grow / maintain business relationships and address customer concerns and needs, which may require travel with overnight stays;

Maintains up-to date current scientific literature;

Train sales representatives on new products. 

Qualifications: 

At minimum, Master’s Degree in Microbiology or related field, or 5 years of related experience or combination of experience and education;

Project and fiscal management experience, a plus;

Industry-related membership in organizations such as ASM, IAFP, AOAC, PDA, etc., desirable;

Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of products, together with various industry-related software packages;

Documentation of a minimum of 12 hours of relevant continuing education, desired;

Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical documentation;

Astute organizational, time management, attention to detail, customer service, problem solving and follow-through skills required;

Ability to wear a dust/vapor respirator while working;

Ability to lift and move at lest 25 pounds in weight. 

Compensation: 

$90K - $110K DOE for this full-time, exempt position;

Performance reviews every 6 months with salary increase potential based on merit;

Working Hours:

8:00AM – 5:00PM, Monday through Friday
