Controller - Manufacturing Company

Melfred Borzall is a modern, growing manufacturing company based in Santa Maria, California. We specialize in high-quality horizontal directional drilling tools used to install underground infrastructure worldwide. To support our growth and improve our financial management, we are adding a new Controller position to our team, in which the role will have a significant impact on our operations and future success. 

Job Summary:

Reporting to senior management and in collaboration with our external CPA firm, the Controller will lead the financial, accounting, and HR operations.  As a key member of the leadership team, the Controller will drive the implementation of effective financial practices, with a focus on cost accounting, channel profitability analysis and leveraging Sage 100 ERP software. In addition, this role includes supervising our in-house accounting and bookkeeping team.

Duties / Responsibilities: 

Financial Management and Reporting: 

Develop, manage and present accurate financial reports, in collaboration with senior management and our external CPA firm;

Oversee the preparation of quarterly and annual budgets;

Update financial statement structures and revise the chart of accounts to align with strategic goals.

Manage cash flow, bank reconciliations, and multi-state sales tax compliance. 

Cost Accounting and Analysis: 

Improve product costing methodologies to support strategic pricing and profitability analysis;

Evaluate the financial performance of sales channels, including direct, distribution and eCommerce. 

Operational Oversight: 

Supervise and mentor in-house accounting and bookkeeping team, delegating tasks effectively;

Ensure seamless collaboration between internal and external stakeholders, including our external CPA and outsourced HR service providers;

Support payroll, accounts receivable and accounts payable functions. 

Human Resources Oversight: 

Manage HR policies, procedures and compliance, in coordination with our outsourced HR company.

Strategic Leadership: 

Participate in the development of the company’s strategic plans;

Conduct departmental rotations to gain a thorough understanding of the organization’s operations. 

Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or related discipline;

Minimum of 7 years in senior leadership accounting roles, with at least 3 years of HR experience;

Experience in manufacturing, particularly with cost accounting, highly desired;

Proficiency with the MS Office suite of products, Sage 100 ERP software and a strong understanding of EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System);

Proficiency with GAAP accounting standards;

Familiarity with Lean principles, a plus;

Proven ability to lead and develop teams;

Astute oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;

Exceptional organizational, analytical, time management, problem-solving, multi-tasking and attention to detail skills. 

Working Hours:

8:00AM - 4:30PM, Monday – Friday  

Compensation:

$130K - $185K DOE annual base salary, for this full-time exempt position.
